Hurky and Murky and the Christmas Fruitcake

“I can’t think of anything to get Mrs. Wumbottle for Christmas,” said Hurky the mouse to his little mouse pal, Murky.

“After all, Murky, our charming landlady has given us this luxury apartment in a very nice neighborhood, and she leaves us presents almost every day.”

“Yes, yes, yes,” said Murky as he tapped his paw thoughtfully on his forehead. “Why only yesterday, she left us a matching set of jumbo bean-bag chairs.”

The two mice sat at the fancy kitchen table that Mrs. Wumbottle had made for them from a colorful spool of thread, and a very decorative lid from a jar of strawberry jam.

As they sipped tea from their porcelain thimbles, they thought very, very big Christmas thoughts.

Suddenly Hurky said, “I know! Let’s bake her a Christmas fruitcake!” “But, we don’t know how to cook!” exclaimed Murky with concern. Hurky winked at his friend and said, “Well, it can’t be that hard, Murky. We’ll just use a cookbook.”

The two mice stood up, clapped their paws together and did a little dance because they were so happy.
